Cyclone Advice for Onslow to Jurien Bay in the Midwest-Gascoyne, Pilbara

ALERT LEVEL
A Cyclone Advice is current for people in or near Onslow to Jurien Bay in the Midwest-Gascoyne, Pilbara

If you live or are travelling between Onslow and Jurien Bay in the Midwest Gascoyne and Pilbara, you need to prepare your home and family for a cyclone tracking off the Western Australian coast.

Cyclones can be incredibly dangerous, bringing heavy rain, flooding, gales and ocean swells.

Heavy rainfall can also affect roads, making travel difficult or even unsafe. Some roads may be closed for a period of time.

People who are travelling or planning to travel through the area, on land or offshore, need to stay informed and make a plan so they know exactly what to do if the situation gets worse.

Remember that preparing your home and property is your responsibility.

WHAT TO DO:
Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA advises you to:

  • If your plan is to leave, then you need to do so now.
  • Review your cyclone plan and make sure everyone knows what to do.
  • Make sure your emergency kit is ready with essential supplies like food and water.
  • Prepare your home inside and out.
  • Holidaymakers and people travelling through the area should speak with their accommodation provider about their cyclone plan and decide what you will do if the cyclone will impact the area.
  • North West Coastal Highway will possibly be closed from Friday and travellers north of Minilya will not be able to travel south.
  • Your only option then will be to travel further north, and there could be further restrictions on major highways in the coming days.
  • If you are on a vessel on the water or on an island off the coast between Onslow and Jurien Bay, including the Abrolhos Islands, prepare to move to a safer area.
  • Do not drive into water of unknown depth and current. If the road is closed, it means its closed.
  • Take care in areas that have been flooded and be careful driving on gravel roads as surfaces will be slippery and muddy, and vehicles could become bogged.

DETAILS:

Tropical Cyclone Seroja (Category 1) was located at 2:00 am AWST near 18.5S 110.7E, that is 525 km northwest of Exmouth and 770 km north northwest of Carnarvon and moving southwest at 23 kilometres per hour. Tropical cyclone Seroja is expected to bring dangerous weather conditions to the west coast during Sunday or Monday - this is a rare event for people on the west coast of Western Australia with potential impacts in the area between Coral Bay and Jurien Bay, including Carnarvon, Denham, Kalbarri and Geraldton. Severe weather associated with Seroja may also extend further south along the coast to Perth and inland into the Wheatbelt and southern Goldfields during Monday. Tropical cyclone Seroja is forecast to gradually intensify as it tracks to the southwest over open waters, north of Western Australia, during today and into Saturday. Into Sunday, Seroja is expected to turn to the southeast and track towards the west coast before making landfall during late Sunday or early Monday between Carnarvon and Jurien Bay.

A Tropical Low was located at 2:00 am AWST near 14.5S 106.3E, that is 1170 km northwest of Exmouth and 455 km south of Christmas Island and moving northeast at 16 kilometres per hour. Tropical low (23U) is located well to the northwest of the WA mainland. The system has begun to move northeastwards and may strengthen to tropical cyclone intensity later today as it starts to move towards the east. The system is beginning to interact with tropical cyclone Seroja, which is expected to limit development of 23U. Over the weekend the tropical low should move rapidly towards the south, and could pass near the west Pilbara coast during Saturday. There is the risk of a period of damaging winds and heavy rain developing in the Exmouth area as early as Saturday, even though 23U is unlikely to be classified as a tropical cyclone by this stage. By Sunday the system is likely to have weakened over waters west of the Gascoyne coast.
